Sorry Woodstock

I feel sorry for the original hippies. Born in the aftermath of WW2 to a parental generation who had fought against a fascist and racially intolerant regime, this new generation of youngsters genuinely believed they could change the world with their message of peace and love.

The movement fizzled out within a few years but now, 50 years on, the Woodstock generation can see how much their optimistic dream has been totally shattered.

The rhetoric of the Nazis, that sent their parents to war, is now commonplace in mainstream media, bigots are emboldened and the most intolerant politicians are the ones who get elected; who insist all we need is not love but hate, who decide not to give peace a chance.

War. Huh. What is it good for? Absolutely effective distraction, profiteering and political capital.

Sorry hippies. It’s been a bad trip.
